Spring Racing - Caulfield Melbourne Cup Carnival | Suit & Style Guide
October heralds the start of the Spring Racing Carnival, a season full of Group 1 racing that begins with the Caulfield Carnival and the world class Cox Plate at Mooney Valley. From there the racing moves to Flemington with Derby Day marking the start of the Melbourne Cup Carnival.
Although a tailored jacket, trousers and tie is required for access to Member’s areas and Corporate Hospitality at every event, each day in the Melbourne Cup Carnival has an official dress code and traditional flower boutonnière you would do well to observe.
Our guide below considers the men’s fashion conventions for the Melbourne Cup Carnival so you can be suitably attired at whichever day you attend.
- Saturday, November 3
Derby Day opens the Melbourne Cup Carnival Week and, featuring nine Group Races, is arguably the most prestigious day of racing in the Australasian Calendar.
This is the day to dress at your elegant best, with black and white suiting (and greys) as the traditional dress code. This is not the day to overdo your outfit, so instead aim for sleek and elegant.
The official flower for Derby Day is the blue cornflower.
MELBOURNE CUP DAY
- Tuesday, November 6
This event needs no introduction and is the most adventurous fashion day of the Spring Carnival. Consider the official flower for Melbourne Cup Day is the yellow rose, and experiment with colours of suit, tie and pocket square to compliment.
- Thursday, November 8
Also known as Ladies Day, Oaks Day is a day to coordinate with your partner. Opt for a more relaxed style and, although a suit is commonly worn, you may also consider a Blazer or Sport Coat. Look to florals and pastel hues in your shirt, tie and pocket square. The official flower for Oaks Day is the pink rose.
- Saturday, November 10
As the farewell to the Spring Carnival, Stakes Day observes a more relaxed, liberal dress code. Patterned suits, Sport Coats or Linen blazers are all suitable choices. The red rose is the official flower for the day, so work with complimentary colours in your outfit like blues and greys.
Note that a tie is mandatory for access to Member’s areas and Corporate Hospitality on all days including Stakes Day.
