Anthony Squires

The Prime Minister's Suit

Anthony Squires has dressed every Prime Minister since Robert Menzies in 1949 through to our current Prime Minister Scott Morrison (with the exceptions of Paul Keating and Julia Gillard). The Anthony Squires Canberra flagship store has been dressing Government Ministers, Diplomats and other Public Service leaders for decades and the Tailors have built good relationships with the leaders of our country over this time.Creating a suit for a Prime Minister though is always a special occasion and the Anthony Squires Head Tailor, Domenic Colaci, has had a hand in most of these garments over his 62 years with the company.

“Regardless of their political stripes, it’s always an honour to dress the leader of our country.”

Woolmark

A longstanding Partnership

“These men wear a suit every day and are always in the public eye, so favoured fabric choices have been timeless and designed to complement the wearer and not overpower them. Most Prime Ministers over the years have tended to favour the simple designs like blue or navy Herringbones or Birdseye, with a more traditional business cut featuring shoulder padding and a classic drape,” said Mr Colaci.

As the longest standing Woolmark licensee in Australia, Anthony Squires use the finest Australian Merino Wool in every suit and often recommend a good wearing and travelling weight like Super 110-120s for the demands faced by a Prime Minister.

Some Prime Ministers however have been known for their style and have understood the features and benefits of specific fabrics and designs. The Anthony Squires Collins Street Tailor, Joshua Ton, recalls meeting Malcolm Turnbull for his first fitting.

He was already known for dressing well when I met him, and he really engaged with the process.

“On Mr Turnbull’s instruction, Domenic and I created a semi-bespoke suit with basted fittings at various stages of construction and then finished by hand. Mr Turnbull chose Super 150’s Tasmanian Wool from Loro Piana in a classic navy plain worsted. A timeless look and fabric that befitted his position and would stand up well to the rigours of his schedule”.

Mr Ton observed “Mr Turnbull is a man who appreciates the value of dressing well and had favoured the European houses until then. It was a pleasure to demonstrate how Squires measured up against the best in the world.”

Anthony Squires looks forward to continuing this tradition as ‘Unofficial Tailors to the Prime Minister’ and showcasing the skills and luxurious fabrics this iconic Australian brand has to offer.“
