The Modern Groom’s Guide To Wedding Dressing

    Words By Jay Aquino

    May 18, 2025

Before the groom says “I do”, there is one important thing he has to say yes to first: what he is going to wear on the big day. Choosing a wedding outfit is very different from choosing what to wear to work or to an event. A wedding is one of the most important moments in a man’s life, and the suit you wear will live forever in photographs, memories and videos. The last thing any groom wants is to look back years later and question the outfit standing at the altar.

For most men, the classic black dinner suitremainsthe default choice. And forgoodreason. Black tailoring is sleek, elegantand sophisticated without ever feeling overcomplicated. But while people often say you can never go wrong with black, you can go wrong with the fit. A poorly fitted suit willimmediatelyruin the sharpness of the look, no matter how expensive it is. Wedding tailoring should feel clean through the shoulders, structured through the body and balanced in proportion, not too slim, not too loose.

Today, however, wedding dressing is no longer confined to strict tradition. Modern weddings have introduced a more relaxed and expressive approach to tailoring, allowing grooms to move beyond the standard black tuxedo. Rich brown tones, deep navysuitsand even white tailoring have become increasingly popular for men wanting something more contemporary whilestill remainingrefined. For less formal ceremonies, a black blazer paired with tailored trousers can also create the right balance between polished and relaxed.

When it comes to shirting, classics will always work best for more traditional weddings. A crisp white shirtremainsthe safest and most elegantoption. But for weddings with a more modern concept, there is room to experiment with softercolours, textures or details that complement the overall look. Regardless of style, fit should always remain the priority. Underneath a beautiful suit or blazer should be a shirt that feels equally considered. A tailored fit will always helpmaximiseboth comfort and appearance throughout the day.

To complete the look, shoes and accessories should never be overlooked. A polished pair of dress shoes, cufflinks, a bow tie and a pocket square are often the details that bring everything together. They may seem small, but thesefinishing touchesare what elevate a wedding outfit from simply formal to truly memorable.
